Heart of Gratitude
Rev. Andy Nagy-Benson
Dear Church,
I am on the cusp of a three-month sabbatical. I will be off from May 5 through August 12, returning to the office on August 13. My plans for that time apart are taking shape. Here are a few things I am looking forward to in the coming months:
On May 30, I will graduate with a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. My experience in the Creative Writing and Public Theology cohort has been a blessing. Thank you for your encouragement and support these past four years!
For most of June, I will be at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where I intend to be singularly focused on my creative writing (writing, editing, editing some more, submitting work for publication).
In July, our family will be spending a week with my parents and my three siblings and their families for our annual get together. My favorite week of the year.
I realize that sabbaticals are part of my Call Agreement, but I also know that the next three months will ask more of many people. So, I want to thank the Sabbatical Planning Team (Dan Brown, Michele Brown, Leanna Maglienti, Alyssa Sinclair, and Katy Smith Abbott) for their thoughtful administrative work over the past year. And I want to express my gratitude for an all-star lineup of clergy colleagues (Pastor Elizabeth, James Calvin Davis, Lindsey Franklin, Steve Jewett, Larry Jones, Mark Orten, and Nancy Wood) and Eliana Cañas Parra who will be sharing the pastor/preacher load.
With a heart full of gratitude for this opportunity to move at a different pace, I hope you have a wonderful few months. I look forward to reconnecting with you soon.
Grace and Peace,
Andy

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING
Church Council held their monthly meeting ....
Respectfully submitted,
....
-
Between annual meetings, the Church Council meets once a month to fulfill its responsibility to coordinate the church's programs and business. Council has the powers generally ascribed to a corporation's board of directors.
The Church Council is composed of the following Church members: Moderator, Clerk, Treasurer, Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, and the chairpersons of the six church boards. Also, there are three at-large members. One is elected every year and serves a 3 year term.
-
The basic life and work of the church is under the direction and supervision of church boards, which meet monthly at the All Boards Meeting and report to the Church Council. Members of these boards are elected from the membership of the church.

green team announcements
The month of May brings us well into the season of Eastertide, and with it, an abundance of opportunities to rejoice in new life. While caring for creation is a year-round activity, the Green Team is offering multiple opportunities for engagement this month.
Highlights in May:
Green Up Day is Saturday, May 3rd and the Green Team is combining efforts with the youth groups this year. All are welcome to join in the effort! We’ll meet at 10:00 a.m. that morning on the front steps of the church. Bags will be provided, and we will fan out in the downtown area, cleaning up a portion of the banks of Otter Creek, the Marble Works, and the Town Green. This is the 55th year of this annual state-wide event, and participating in your own town or neighborhood is also encouraged.
Please join us after Worship on Sunday, May 11th (yes, Mother's Day!) for the Green Team's 5th Annual Seedling Giveaway in the Fellowship Hall. Pick up a couple of veggie and/or herb plants for your garden and take one small step to help reduce your impact on Mother Earth by growing some of your own food. As in previous years, half the donated seedlings will be given to CVOEO to distribute to their food shelf clients. Many thanks to our volunteers, and we hope to see you there!
Honduras Mission Project Support
From Maverick:
Every year, my uncle travels to Honduras for a mission project focused on building homes for families in need. This year, my mom and I have decided to join him in this meaningful effort.
During our trip, we will have the incredible opportunity to work alongside the local community to help complete the construction project. Additionally, we plan to spend time playing with the children at the orphanage and praying with them and their families. It's heartbreaking to see the extent of poverty that many people live in, and we believe that even the smallest efforts can make a positive impact in their lives.
To support this mission, we are seeking to raise $4,400 to cover plane tickets and other necessities. We’ll be sharing our journey and experiences through pictures on our Instagram page, allowing everyone to follow along with our adventure.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about our trip, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your support!
If you would like to support maverick please make a donation to the pastor’s discressionary fund with “Maverick in the memo line”

Season Of Sabbaticals
Dear Friends,
As many of you may know, a season of sabbaticals is approaching for our congregation. Both Pastor Andy and Pastor Elizabeth will be on leave for several months this year. Church Council approved their respective plans for time away last summer, and since then, the Sabbatical Planning Team has been working to ensure coverage in the pulpit, for pastoral care, and in the office. Their leaves will overlap for several weeks during the summer, but the program year will remain intact and we will continue to “be the church” during their time of rest and renewal.
We are very fortunate to have a deep well of expertise present in this congregation upon which we will be drawing. There will be people that we know and love and trust to shepherd us through this time. We are grateful to have Rev. Mark Orten, Rev. Dr. James Calvin Davis, Rev. Dr. Steve Jewett, Rev. Nancy Wood, Rev. Lindsey Franklin, and Eliana Cañas Parra in the pulpit. Steve and Nancy have been engaged to provide pastoral care, cover memorial services, and respond to other emergencies while both of the pastors are away. Steve will also be providing additional pastoral care while each of the pastors is working solo. Eliana will be a Pastoral Intern in the office working up to 30 hours a week during the time when our pastors have an overlapping leave, leading worship each week, serving as the main point of contact for any pastoral concerns, and also providing pastoral care.
The volunteer work of many hands on boards and committees and in innumerable other ways will continue unabated, even while the summer months bring a slower pace to the work. Our culture of care is strong, and we will continue to care for our neighbors as we care for ourselves.
Pastor Andy’s first day of sabbatical will be Monday, May 5. He will rejoin us in mid-August. Pastor Elizabeth will serve through the end of June, including a trip with the Senior Youth Group trip to Maine, and her first day of sabbatical will be Tuesday, July 1. She will rejoin us in mid-October. Eliana will be in the office from June 16 to August 17, overlapping with each of the pastors for at least a week to ease the transition.
With grace and faith, we are confident in our congregation’s ability to support our pastors in their time of rest and renewal and we are profoundly grateful to all who will be serving in new ways this year.
With deep appreciation,
The Sabbatical Planning Team
Michele Brown, Dan Brown, Leanna Maglienti, Moderator, Alyssa Sinclair, and Katy Smith Abbott

Have You Read ‘A Church Manual of the Congregational Church of Middlebury, Vermont?’
What is the purpose of these Manuals? The design of each Manual is, to promote in the members of this church, a better knowledge of themselves, and of the principles by which they profess, and of the principles by which they profess to be governed; to increase their personal piety, and give it a more practical direction; to facilitate their acquaintance with each other, and strengthen the bonds of their Christian Union, - that thus the church may be established in the birth in the faith of the gospel; be rooted and grounded in love; may let its light shine before men; and be wholly consecrated to the service of its Redeemer and Lord.
In the past records of our church, there are references to Church Manuals dated 1853, 1875, 1890, 1904, 1914, and 1925. In these manuals, there are membership rolls of the Church. The Middlebury Congregational Society records, for the time period 1805 to February 1852, were destroyed by a fire (no details available as to the location or severity of the fire). The Society met in March 1852 to renew the Articles of Association. It was presumed that this may be a reason for publishing a Church Manual in 1853 [un-dated pencil written notes – author unknown].
For the six manuals, each was type-set by a professional printing concern. The Manual pamphlet was no longer published after 1925. Instead, there was a typewritten (8 ½ x 11) version of the membership rolls prepared within the church each year (at least there were several found in the Church files. Seemingly, this was the version which transformed into today’s Directory. In today’s Directory, the names, addresses, and phone numbers were included but there was no information as to method of joining the church.
The narrative text is very similar in each Manual. The succession of pastors is given in each Manual. In the historical sketches portion of each manual, there is a summary of the substantive repairs / renovations given up to the date of the Manual. Also given in each Manual, there are at least two membership rolls. In the first two pamphlets (1853 and 1875), the membership rolls is chronological by the year in which the person joined the Church. In the third pamphlet (1890), there are two alphabetical listings: male and female. In each listing the year in which the person joined the Church is given. In the fourth pamphlet (1904), there are two alphabetical listings: resident members and non-resident members. In each listing, a letter ‘L’ is used if the person joined the Church by letter, others were received by profession of faith. There is a single list of members with the year in which they joined the Church and their residence given. It is only these two most recent Manuals (1914 and 1925) that the addresses of the members were given.

Each name has one or more of four explanations: (L) signifies received by Letter, all others were received by profession by Faith; (N R) non-resident; (C) clergyman; (M) missionary. There is no narrative text for this Manual.
A Manual of the Congregational Church of Middlebury, Vermont – 1904 [Middlebury, Vermont, no printer listed, 1904] - This pamphlet provides several narrative presentations: A Historical Sketch; Religious Services and Societies; Rules and Usages; Form of Admission to Membership. These were followed by two lists of members: Resident Members and Non-resident Members – listings give a total membership of 320.
